Don't be fooled by its name. This is not created by Microsoft. It is more of a clone of Notepad, but has some much needed features that makes you wonder why Notepad doesn't have them.

It is simple and lightweight like Notepad, but it has syntax highlighting and a few other useful features that are missing in Notepad. I'd say if you are running Windows, Notepad2 is a must-have replacement for Notepad as it is simply a better program with no drawbacks. In fact, there are even instructions for completely replacing Notepad with Notepad2.

It is completely free and open source, and downloading and installation can't be any quicker and easier.
