Again, this has nothing to do with Microsoft.

If you are looking for something that more closely resembles a swiss army knife than Notepad2 and is still free and open source, then Notepad++ is the program for you. This is the Windows equivilent of Gedit, and it has syntax highlighting support for many languages. In fact, it's nice and simple for you to create a syntax highlighting scheme of your own with this text editor. It supports a multiple document interface with tabs, find/replace in all open documents, and many other useful tools.

Downloading and installation is quick and painless, and while it doesn't quite have the lightning speed that Notepad has (due to Notepad being small and equally as useless), it's still very fast when compared to most other programs with around the same feature set. As I said before, this is basically like a clone of Gedit, performance-wise and feature-wise.
