I've no idea what you mean by "translators", but I'm going to assume that you mean language (e.g. French to Swahili) translators. wc *is* "professional-quality", since I believe it is a GNU clone of the original wc, which was written for AT&T UNIX.

However, since you are avoiding wc, and don't feel like elaborating on why not, I suggest you write your own.

It's not hard.

Thank you.

Of course, I would not ask for a program if i could code one myself. So, my excuse to lose is my bad english ;)

Take a look here and you will know what i mean:
http://www.anycount.com/
http://www.translation3000.com/

and, btw, I didn't mean that wc was entirely worthless - but in the special context i need something, it pretty much is. Companies ask freelancers, what software the use for line/word count. if u answer either u use the MS Word function or wc, you won't get the job, cause the only sum up everything, but don calculate the whole mess by the usual standards. If you don't know what these are and are interested, do a search, cause within a post it is - for my limited english - too complicated.

Are you looking for something capable of counting the number of overall lines, blank lines, commented lines, etc in a source file?

No - I am searching for a software for professional translators as stated above. Just hit the links and read some stuff there.

These programs do not just add stuff. There are standards for professional translators, for example:
You get paid per line
Not every line is a line, cause a line needs to have a special number of signs. Signs are not only letters but commata etc. spaces do (not) count (depends, but they are never all included).
Also, it depends on the font and the size you use (for fulltext) etc.
These rules are different for different companies, but there are average settings (that you can align in this special software).

There are as well rules for footnotes, comments etc. - and special software can calculate all this. There are plenty of programs out there, that can do it - but none (so far) for Linux (it seems).

If you didn't get it by now, sorry, but I can't express myself better ;)
